The Workings Of A PBX Telephone Systems

If you own a large business, then communication must be your prime concern. PBX telephone systems are a solution to address this concern. They are a type of small central office at your place. PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange.

The working and other factors related to PBX telephone systems are mentioned here.

A small PBX known as a "key system" can generally handle 0 to 75 lines with no problem. Larger PBXs can deal anywhere from 100 to 20,000 lines. An internal call on a PBX normally needs dialing a 3, 4 or 5 digit number.

To connect to some external number, you will have to go via trunk to the central office. Generally, you have to press 1 or 2 digit trunk access code to access a trunk. In US, the trunk access code is normally 8 or 9.

The PBX telephone system shares trunks or lines connected to the central office. If you have 100 people in your office, then odds are that everyone will not be able to talk the on phone at the same time. So it would be very costly to pay for 100 trunks when just half are used mostly. Here, PBX systems are useful.

What do PBX telephone systems actually do?

PBX telephone systems handle complete processing of all the calls within it. The features like call forwarding, call conferencing, intercoms and call transferring are required by the companies. Hence, these come in-built in these systems. A PBX telephone system also allows the companies to control numbers which can or cannot be dialed.

Working of PBX telephone systems

First, when you pick up your phone, a signal is send to the PBX system. The PBX system interprets this signal as give me a dial tone. Then, the system provides you with it. On the dialing of 1st digit, the system understands the type of call i.e., internal or external. At this point, it starts the routing process.

In case of an internal call, it sends the call within the PBX system and does not use an outside "trunk". In case of an external call, it begins to look at the numbers dialed by you & sends the complete information to the central office.

The PBX costs vary according to the features of the PBX telephone system selected. More features you select, more costly the PBX telephone systems become.

Today, you can even go for a VoIP PBX or IP PBX (Internet Protocol PBX). It uses IP data networks to alleviate telecommunication. The prompt advantage of VoIP PBX telephone systems is that you will not have to replace your existing phones or phone numbers to accommodate this facility.

You can select small sized or large sized PBX telephone systems according to your requirements. Once installed, this system will revolutionize the in-office communication.
